Capsule review:

The St. Paul Hotel's longtime breakfast and lunch restaurant has been thoughtfully remade as the casual M Street Cafe, a tasteful blend of muted colors, comfortable banquettes, handsome iron railings and cheery bright lights that belies the windowless basement location and suits the all-business clientele. At breakfast, the menu is several steps above the two-eggs-any-style mode of wake-me-up dining. Entrees include citrus-cured salmon hash with poached eggs; a Benedict built with grilled beef tenderloin and chive Hollandaise; two fried eggs, white Cheddar and bacon on sourdough; thin Swedish pancakes with lingonberries; a wild mushroom-goat cheese scramble; caramel-banana French toast; and oatmeal three ways. A daily buffet is loaded with fruits, cheeses, smoked fish, sopressata, prosciutto, fresh-squeezed juices and tempting pastries. Lunch includes an array of a la carte sandwiches (shrimp-egg salad, chicken BLT with pesto), salads and soups and a changes-daily buffet. (Rick Nelson, 12/7/2006)
