Gordon Johnson CD release show

With “GJ4,” Twin Cities bass great Gordy Johnson continues his series of quietly spectacular trio releases spotlighting the crème de la crème of local and national musicians. This sublime new set is dedicated to his late father, Minnesota Orchestra bassist Clifford Johnson, and to sax legend Dewey Redman. The drum chair is kept hot by the always remarkable Steve Smith (of Vital Information and Journey fame), the always inventive Matt Wilson, the ever-reliable Phil Hey, Karrin Allyson band favorite Todd Strait and the man of a thousand combos, Dave King. Meanwhile, the piano gets wooed by NYC critics’ favorite Frank Kimbrough, St. Paul composer/educator Laura Caviani, former Twin Citian turned global cult star Bill Carrothers,and two younger players with bright futures, Tanner Taylor and Bryan Nichols. Taylor, Caviani and Nichols will be on board for this weekend’s release party. Tom Surowicz
