The new CD "Tough Commute" is so-named because it's a collaboration between Twin Cities-based jazz guitarist David Martin and his Portland, Ore., counterpart, Mike Doolin. When they recorded their first disc, "Reflection," in 2009, Martin was residing in Portland, too. But times and zip codes change, Martin returned to Minnesota, where he's played over the years with lots of Latin bands (Salsa del Sol, Puro Cubano, Beiro Mar Brasil), and the pair's twin guitar gigs became mighty rare. So, Martin & Doolin's CD release party also serves to introduce the little group to Minneapolis audiences, and the guitarists will be joined by a great rhythm section (Chris Bates, bass; Pete Hennig, drums). Expect original music along the lines of Mike Stern, Pat Metheny and John Abercrombie. Mike Doolin is also a nationally renowned guitar maker, and he's conducting an afternoon workshop on the making and repairing of instruments, where aspiring players can get to sample his wares.
