Chicago Afrobeat Project featuring Tony Allen

Seventy four-year-old master drummer Tony Allen has happily, if belatedly, gotten his props as an Afrobeat pioneer. Allen's the man who powered so many classic 1970s Fela LP's. More recently, he's communed with a host of famous younger generation rockers -- Damon Albarn, Flea, Sebastian Tellier, Simon Tong, Jarvis Cocker -- plus with veteran, Paul Simonon, of The Clash. This week, Allen will again join forces with his well-schooled and gifted pals in the Chicago Afrobeat Project, with whom he recorded in 2013. They kick off an eight-city U.S. tour on the West Bank. Like-minded opening act Black Market Brass, esteemed local practitioners of Nigerian-style grooving, should get the club energized early. Have booty, will shake. Tom Surowicz
