Butch Thompson

Jazz and ragtime piano great Butch Thompson has put together an enticing special program this week, a salute to the Hall Brothers Jazz Band and their long, fruitful run at the old Emporium of Jazz in Mendota. They were the house group from 1966 to 1991! Butch played his other instrument, clarinet, in that fabled band. Now he's gathered together band alumni including: Russ Hall (trombone); fine pianist, Mike Polad (who used to be known for his saxophone work); cutup Charlie DeVore (cornet); and Bill Evans (bass). Along with "Prairie Home Companion" regular, Peter Johnson, gamely taking the place of a couple of the Twin Cities' most colorful drummers of days gone by, "Doggie" Berg and Red Maddock. Representing the younger generation is impressive blues singer, Hilary Thavis, another PHC/Garrison Keillor favorite. Thavis grew up in Rome, in the shadows of the Vatican, a child of Minnesota parents. Her timely song, "Facebook Blues," is a funny gem. Tom Surowicz
