Crimes of the Heart

Playwright Beth Henley won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for this dark comedy. At the center of the southern-fried story is — what else — a dysfunctional family. Three sisters reunite at their granddad’s home and the civility unravels into recriminations. Each sister disgorges her emotional baggage and deals with her “crime of the heart.” It’s a sardonic, funny play that was made into a film with Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek. The Guthrie production, directed by Marcela Lorca, features Maggie Chestovich, Georgia Cohen, Ashley Rose Montondo and Sarah Agnew. Graydon Royce

Review: Beth Henley’s play about three sisters dealing with the crises in their lives gets a broadly comic treatment in Marcela Lorca’s production. That would be fine except that he never connect with the real humanity of these characters, when it comes time to feel sympathy. (Graydon Royce)
